This is a clinically oriented course, which covers topics that were not included in the basic courses of both removable partial denture fabrication and complete denture fabrication. Topics including denture repairs, overdentures, implant supported dentures, single dentures, and combination case will be covered on the complete denture side of the course. Topics on the removable partial denture side of the course will include rotational path removable partial dentures, swing lock and precision attachment removable partial dentures, as well as repair and maintenance phase information.
Learning Objectives
Course Objectives
At the completion of the course the student will:
- Understand the difference between a provisional immediate complete denture service (stayplate) and a conventional immediate complete denture service.
- Have an exposure to various repair methods used in complete and partial denture service.

- Understand the clinical steps required for the repair a complete denture or partial denture.
- Be able to organize a plan of treatment for a combination case.
- Have an exposure to both rotational path removable partial dentures and swing lock removable partial dentures.
- Have an exposure to precision attachment removable partial dentures and overdentures.
- Be familiar with the necessary steps for the planning of a single tooth implant replacement as well as the planning necessary for an implant supported lower overdenture.

Associate Professor
School of Dentistry, University of Michigan
Dr. Shotwell joined the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1973 after a serving as a Dental Officer in the Navy. Dr. Shotwell is currently a full-time faculty member. He has been an instructor in both the graduate and undergraduate clinics. He also participates in the Dental Faculty Associates practice.
Dr. Shotwell's research interests include aspects of color with dental materials as well as in vivo porcelain wear studies. He is also interested in outcome studies that evaluate the patient's perception relative to success of treatment especially for complete denture treatment. He has recently spent a sabbatical period at Mc Gill University in Montreal, Canada, working to begin a long term clinical trial regarding this research.
